Some heavy-hitting orchestral and chamber pieces by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, and Sibelius, as well as the versatile and beautiful voice of Dawn Upshaw grace us with their presence this week. While events outside the Kimmel arena seem to be a bit slow, next week promises more off-the-beaten-track events. We might even get an opera or two soon…

The Philadelphia Art Alliance’s Connoisseur Series welcomes up-and-coming cellist Efe Baltacigil for a solo recital, joined by Amy Yang on piano.

The NHK Symphony Orchestra, Japan's oldest professional orchestra, will play some truly exceptional orchestral works. For anyone who has not heard La Mer or Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, give them a try.

Wednesday
Listen to the wisdom of world-renowned soprano, Dawn Upshaw, as she delivers a master class with students selected from nearby conservatories and universities.

Piffaro, the renaissance band, teams up with Cantores Minores, a choir of men and boys from Finland, for Finnish choral music (including Sibelius, Madetoja, Rautavaara, Linkola, Mäntyjärvi) and European choral music (including Bach, Schütz, Mendelssohn).

Founded in the summer of 2000, the Daedalus String Quartet has “quickly established itself as among America's outstanding string quartets and one of the most in-demand young ensembles performing today.” Works on the program for their current tour include pieces by Debussy, Beethoven, Bartok, Schumann, and Mozart.

Under the baton of Peter Oundjian, the Philadelphia Orchestra and soprano Dawn Upshaw perform works by Kernis, Dutilleux, and Sibelius. Dawn Upshaw is truly a marvel in concert. With such a versatile voice at its disposal, Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

For a relaxing Sunday afternoon of lesser-known Mendelssohn piano music, head on over to the German Society. Roberto Prosseda, piano, devotes his “Mendelssohn Discoveries” program to previously unrecorded piano works by Mendelssohn.
