Whiz of the Web: Tuesday Torpedoes

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

  • That Star Trek auction that went down this past weekend did way better than expected, pulling in a total of over $7 million. Nearly every lot went for more than its presale estimate; the highest-selling item was a model of the Enterprise D that was used in the pilot of "ST:TNG" - it went for $576,000. Sweet. If anybody wants to donate anything they bought at the auction to Phillyist, we'd be eternally grateful.
  • The bunnies have a fun treat for us in honor of Halloween: a Spoooky Soundboard, featuring audio clips from some of their horror and action re-enactments. Apparently some out-takes are also included, which is cool. Happy Bun-O-Ween!
  • The executive producer of "Battlestar Galactica" - David Eick - is remaking another cheesy sci-fi '70s TV show, this time for NBC. It's "The Bionic Woman," people! She's coming back! Fans of the original will be disappointed, though; Eick is planning on a complete re-imagining of the show, keeping only the title. He and fellow producer Laeta Kalogridis plan to use the show to "explore the role of professional women in contemporary society and how they juggle their various roles." Well, okay. As long as there's also cool bionically powered super-fighting, accompanied by a sweet "ch-ch-ch" sound effect.
  • Batman is unhappy. Why? Because...HIS PARENTS ARE DEAD!!! (Via)
  • It's the fight you've all been waiting for - the rag-tag human fleet from "Battlestar Galactica" faces off against the Imperial Fleet from Star Wars. A pretty impressive little movie, full of excellent spaceship-on-spaceship violence. Yay for that, and also yay for the fact that Google's purchase of YouTube (which we're sure you've read about already, here or elsewhere) hasn't ruined the site...yet. (Via)
  • Here's an ugly rumor - supposedly the Nintendo Wii's sensor bar (which we assume is the bit it uses to figure out where the Wiimote is) totally craps out when it is hit by...sunlight. Regular old natural light from Sol. Um...that sucks. Sure, usually us gamers play in rooms lit only by the pleasant glow of our TV screens, but still. This could become an issue during, like, the daytime, if we need to open a window to air the place out.
  • A couple bits of mostly unrelated but cool news: TCM is going to start a new late-night series called "TCM Underground" featuring cult horror films. It's starting, appropriately enough, this Friday the 13th. But here's the best bit: the host will be Rob Zombie. Brilliant! More good movie-related news: that irritating Dobby creature is not coming back for the next Harry Potter film. That's fine with us; we never liked him in the books anyway.
