FARM SPLAT: A lot of chatter, but what does it matter?

Here at Phillyist, we were really excited to have Farm Aid come to Camden. What a great idea! We are, after all, Jersey fresh. We were still excited to see the likes of Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews talk on Saturday morning about how important it is to support the family farmer, about how food corporations are monsters, about how the high calorie/high fat food we serve our kids is killing them, about how important it is to know where our food comes from.

Imagine our dismay, then, when we got into the actual concert to see a menu of Dominos, nachos, and $3 coffee served with non-dairy creamer, the number one ingredient of which is corn syrup solids.

We understand that you, Farm Aid, are trying to fight the good fight, but there is no excuse for compromising your morals and standards in order to play in an arena that throws that exact message into the faces of the farmers you’re trying to help. We’re sure this has something to do with contracts at the Tweeter Center. An easy solution? Stick to your guns, practice what you preach, and pick another venue. A few serving stations of Aramark-prepared organic food and beer is not nearly enough to negate the fact that you compromised their standards to get the venue. Shame, shame, we know your name, and it’s Farm Aid.
