- We got the heads-up a while back that a flash mob would be forming at Geno's on Saturday, 9/9 to order steaks in languages other than English, in protest of the infamous "English ONLY" sign. We debated whether to post about it here or not, fearing the news might get to the staff of Geno's before the big day, and ruin the surprise. By the time we were done debating, the event had already occurred. Luckily, PhillyIMC has an article all about it, complete with video. Apparently Geno's refused the orders (with the odd phrase "set the bets" - is that English??) and even called the cops.
- South Philly residents headed out onto the streets on Sunday to protest the plans to build a casino at Columbus Boulevard and Reed Street. One guy decided satire and sarcasm were the best way to protest; he dressed up as a hooker and claimed he was representing "Sluts for Slots," an organization that supports the new casino because it will increase the rates for prostitutes. Nice.
- Looks like we won't have tough DA Lynne Abraham to kick around anymore; she's announced she'll be retiring and won't seek another term in 2009.
