Looking ahead at your Monday night and seeing nothing but watching re-runs or scouring Myspace for high school classmates?
No need. Tune in to 88.5 WXPN at 7:30 p.m. tonight for a live broadcast of tonight’s sold out Corinne Baily Ray/Gran Bel Fisher show at World Café Live. Both artists have been featured on the channel’s airwaves before, so if you’re a WXPN listener like this Phillyist is, you’ve heard tracks from Gran Bel’s debut album, Full Moon Cigarette, already. If not, well, what are you waiting for? WXPN rocks, and Gran Bel’s music is chock full of passionate songwriting and stellar musicianship. And Corine Bailey Rae’s music is a dream, her voice light and airy. If you wore out your Garden State CD by repeating Thievery Corporation’s "Lebanese Blond," then you’re going to fall in love with Bailey Rae.
As said above, the show’s sold out. If you're hoping to score some, um, resale tickets and end up striking out, not all is lost. The free Philly Rising open mike starts at 8 p.m., and while you don’t know if the next performer on the list is going to bomb or soar, it’s always interesting.
One more World Café Live note: Jersey gal Toby Lightman is playing this Friday’s “Free at Noon” concert (her “Devils and Angels” is one of the best “screw you” breakup songs of recent memory). The show might be free, but the RSVPs go fast, so click here if you want to start your weekend early.
Listen online at WXPN.
