Yo, Philly in the News

  • Careful out there, folks; the National Weather Service has issued an excessive-heat warning for the Philadelphia region, now through Thursday night. We're looking at temperatures at or near 100 this week, and it could feel as hot as 110. Call the city's heat help line (215-765-9040) if you feel sick, are concerned about someone else, or just need tips on how to stay cool.
  • Oh, no! Rolling Rock won't be brewed in Latrobe, PA anymore! Thankfully, it's not going away for good (you can make fun of us - many have - but we like a Rolling Rock now and then), and it's not moving far; Rolling Rock was sold to Anheuser-Busch in May, and they plan to keep brewing the beer in Newark, New Jersey. Other info of interest in this story: apparently nobody is sure what the "33" below the pledge of quality on the bottle means, but some interesting theories are offered.
  • Supporters of our old friend Santorum have been passing around a link to an editorial on AlJazeerah.info and have been using this somehow as proof that Bob Casey is evil. The Inquirer story offers only a link to the wrong website, but we found the actual editorial here, via GOP Bloggers. Basically, it criticizes some recent inflammatory remarks made by Santorum and asks people to vote Democratic. The best part is, despite what Santorum's supporters obviously assumed, this Al-Jazeerah has no connection at all to the Arabic TV network al-Jazeera (who, as far as we know, aren't exactly all that bad, anyway) - it's based in Georgia, and it's goal is to "promote cross-cultural understanding between people all over the world." Wow, yeah. Who wants the support of an evil organization like that? Anyway, Santorum's spokeswoman apparently said it doesn't make a difference. Maybe she figures all those Muslims are pretty much the same?
