Yo, Philly in the News: Double-Sized Edition

  • Remember that mysterious chemical spill that caused so much trouble in the Wissahickon and Schuylkill a month or so back? We mentioned it here a few times. Well, looks like it was all Merck's fault, and they're getting fined.
  • Hundreds of Jews rallied in Philly on Monday around lunchtime, most to support Israel in their current actions against Hezbollah, although there was also a small group there to protest the use of violence by both sides of the conflict.
  • Philadelphia Magazine's annual Best of Philly issue is coming out this week, and CBS has a preview for us. They cover only the most important stuff: cheese steaks and pizza.
  • The new owners of the Daily News, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Philly.com are jumping in bed with Monster. Look for a new joint website at www.philly.com/monster some time next month. Hopefully this will mean it'll be easier to get a job in Philly in the future...
  • Cops found 284 marijuana plants in various "secluded areas" of Montgomery County - about $20,000 dollars worth, in fact. The AP article says: "Officials photographed the plants, then dug them up and burned them." Right. They burned them. Uh huh. Okay. Sure.
  • Cops went to the home of a New Jersey exotic dancer on Friday after they got a call about somebody there attempting suicide. They didn't find anybody trying to kill themselves, but they did find plenty of human remains: six skulls and a severed hand floating in a Mason jar ("She calls it 'Freddie,' a friend told the Newark Star-Ledger"). The cops were understandably disturbed and arrested her. Apparently the dancer (who's a goth girl named Kay) got the skulls from a mail-order catalog, and the hand from an admirer who happens to be a medical student. The Daily News headline? SHE GOT A HAND.

I think you mean KYW, you know CBS 3 and not the network, 'cause I really don't see the Best of Philly making national news, plus it saying kyw.com and CBS 3 would also be big hints.

I originally wrote a rather childish response to your comment, Mr. Goldman, but I've decided to delete it. Anyway, the point is, yes, the story is indeed from CBS 3, but since CBS 3 is still CBS, I thought it was okay to refer to it as simply CBS, especially since this is a local blog and when we refer to CBS we will almost always be referring to CBS 3. I apologize if I was unclear or misleading.

Most people I know refer to the station as "Channel 3" - so you really sound like a carpetbagger when you use things like "CBS 3" so maybe you should try to use some of the local lingo, 'cause otherwise you are going to sound like you are writing this from New York. Quick lingo lesson:
Locals call what you call "CBS 3" the rather prosaic "Channel 3" with "KYW" being used for just the radio station which you listened to on a snowy day in the hope of hearing your school closing number. And I hope I don't gotta explain what a school closing number is to you either!
