
- In the hopes of helping to stop the rising tide of violence in the city, Governor Rendell has given a bunch of money to the police. Councilman Michael Nutter, who finally officially declared his candidacy for Mayor on Saturday, has additional plans, which include those surveillance cameras we keep talking about.
- It's a sad day for Philadelphians. Harry Olivieri, who co-founded Pat's King of Steaks and is generally credited with having co-invented the cheese steak itself, died on Thursday of heart failure. He was 90. The "Pat" of Pat's King of Steaks was Harry's older brother; it's Frank, Harry's son, who runs the restaurant now.
- 200 to 300 evacuees from Lebanon arrived in Philly this weekend, fleeing the violence in that country. Did anyone tell them about how violent it is here right now?
- Besides violence, we've also had a lot of rain in the area recently - so much, in fact, that WXPN was forced to cancel most of the performances at their All About the Music Festival on Saturday. Apparently technicians feared the effects of water on the sound equipment...although why they couldn't just cover the stuff up we don't know.
- The city of Philadelphia has told the Boy Scouts to stop discriminating against gays, or else! The "or else" being paying a fair amount of rent for their headquarters in the city, or getting evicted from it. Nice.
