Phillyist's Favorite...Place to Grab a Burrito

ElFuego.jpgFirst, let me start with a confession: I am an East Coast girl - Philadelphia born and raised. This means two things in relation to this post: (1) I don't have that inherent knack that allows people to eat burritos without the contents eventually exploding out of the tortilla and (2) when it comes to SoCal and Tex-Mex versions of Mexican fare, I am in no way qualified to discuss what's authentic. I can, however, tell you what I like. And what I like is the chorizo burrito at El Fuego on Walnut Street. It's extremely tasty.

El Fuego is not the place to go for a fancy dinner (there's no waiter service, for a start - you order at the counter, eat out of baskets, and bus your own table when you're done), but it is a great place for a fast bite: the service is quick and friendly, the portions are large, the prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is laid back. There are a couple of small booths in the back, but most of the seating is in the front, at large, communal tables in front of the flatscreen TV - usually tuned in to soccer or "The Simpsons" (but with the sound turned down, as there's always some good music on).

Their guacamole is a personal favorite of mine, and I recommend you try it with a side order of their chips, if your stomach is up to the challenge of eating more than their sizable burritos. Or, if you're like me and your burrito fillings end up out of the wrapper and on your dish, you can always order your burritos "naked" - that's filling only, no wrapper - then get the chips and guac and eat it all nacho style.
