A Spiritual and Social X-Ray: This Week in Philadelphia Theatre

This week’s quote comes from Stella Adler, who said “The theatre is a spiritual and social X-ray of its time.” Meanwhile, we’re sorry we didn’t have any listings for you last week. If you’ll recall, we were having some server issues. But they’re better now, and here we are to catch you up. Now, on with the listings!

Butterflies are Free - Because if you put them in a jar, they’ll suffocate. Through July 8. For tickets, call 215.723.9984.

Bright Lights, Big City - A rock opera set in Reaganomics-fueled Manhattan? What’s not to love? Through July 2. Tickets online.

The Foreigner - You know. Like what Republicans seem to be afraid of. Through July 23. Ticket information is online.

The Lion King - It’s the circle of life! Through September 10. Tickets are selling out quickly, but are available online.

Laughter on the 23rd Floor - Does it matter what we write here? It’s Neil Simon, so of course you should go! Through June 24. Tickets may be purchased online.

Radio Gals - The show synopsis uses the phrase “zany hilarity,” so it has to be good! Through July 2. For more information, contact the theatre.

I Hate Hamlet - This will be especially interesting if the drunken Barrymore character takes a leak onstage. Through June 24. For reservations, call 610.296.9245.

The Island - If it’s funny, we really do hope it’s surprisingly so. We don’t usually expect plays about political prisoners to be slapstick in nature. Through June 25. Ticket information is online.

Big River - Not to be confused with “Old Man River.” Through June 25. Tickets available on TicketLeap.

Over the River and Through the Woods - Our grandparents like to play matchmakers, too! Through June 25. Ticket information is online.

The Man From Nebraska - And here we thought those were the normal signs of a mid-life crisis. Through June 25. Tickets via the online box office.

Since Africa - Somebody should have told us that privileged white folks can accidentally be racists. Through June 25. Tickets online.

The Thing About Men - We really dig this poster. And the play sounds funny, too. Through July 2. For more information, call 215.574.3550.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum - Stephen Sondheim + Roman farce = good times had by all. Through June 25. Tickets are online.

Godspell - Because Jesus was actually a hippie. Through July 9. Ticket information is online.

Menopause: The Musical - The name says it all, doesn't it? Shows at the Society Hill Playhouse, Wednesday through Saturday at 8 PM, again at 4PM on Saturday, and Sunday at 2 PM and 5:30 PM. Tickets are $45. Call 215.923.0210 for reservations. The Society Hill Playhouse is located at 507 South 8th Street in Philadelphia.

All day long, he floated on the breeze
Without a thought of who he was or where he was going.

"Am I a Man”, he thought, "who dreamed that I was a butterfly?
Or am I butterfly, dreaming that I am a man?
