Yo, Philly in the News

  • On Friday, we mentioned the fact that a health advisory had been issued which warned folks to avoid all contact with the Wissahickon Creek and Schuylkill River. Well, happily that advisory has been lifted, as water tests have revealed that the water is safe. It is a bit upsetting, however, that they still don't know yet what exactly killed all the fish (the event that started all this)...
  • Have you happened to notice, walking the streets of our fair city, the occasional odd plaque seemingly sunk into the blacktop of the street, saying something about Toynbee? Well, you're not crazy; we've seen them, too, and in fact, Philly's got more than a dozen of them, and may actually be the birthplace of the phenomenon, although they can be found in cities all over the world. Nobody knows for sure who makes them or what they mean, but for more information, as well as for pictures and various crazy theories about the tiles, check out sites like Toynbee.net and ResurrectDead.com.
  • You also may not be crazy if you thought you saw a horse roaming the streets of Philadelphia early Sunday morning. Turns out one escaped from a stable up there, although it was quickly rounded up and taken back. And that's all we have to say about that. No, sir, no silly horse puns from us. We're just not that kind of blog.
  • The fellow who threw out the first pitch in the Phillies' winning game Sunday afternoon was none other than Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, Jr. He grew up a Phillies fan in Trenton, NJ and says throwing the ball (while wearing a Phillies jersey with his own name across the back, no less) was a dream come true. We'd like to say having a local fellow on the highest court in the land is a dream come true for us, but...well, we're about to get political, so we'll just stop right there.
