Whiz of the Web: Friday Fried Onions

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

  • Check out this jaw-dropping split-screen video, apparently real (although who knows these days), of a dude playing a two-player arcade game by himself, using one hand to control each player. The video follows him through an entire level, and he only gets killed once, meanwhile performing ridiculously amazing feats of ambidextrousisity (is that a word?). This ain't no kids' game, either; it's the ridiculously difficult space shooter Ikaruga. Which we beat once. Playing it in one player mode, of course. On the easiest difficulty level. After we'd built up a ton of extra lives. Holy crap. (Via Yagathai)
  • Just what we needed - another version of Super Mario Bros.! Okay, so we didn't really need it, but this one is still kind of fun. It's sort of a vaguely 3D version of the game called Super Mario Bros. 2.5D, wherein you can tilt the "camera" along two axes and view the world from various different angles using the A, S, W, and D keys (you control Mario with the arrow keys). The levels are new and different, and the physics of Mario's world have changed a bit; you can jump further and break bricks when you're small. And look out for those pirhanna plants! (Via)
  • We don't believe we've mentioned Matthew's Celebrity Pixies Covers here before, so when we saw the link on Table of Malcontents, we decided it was time. Basically this dude impersonates some famous musician (usually the least appropriate one), and then sings a Pixies song in their voice. So you end up with "Hey" as performed by Prince and "Wave of Mutilation" as performed by the Bee Gees. It's pure genius, really. And they're all free to download! (You can check him out on MySpace, too, if you're into that kind of thing.) (Via)

  • Our beloved Wii has taken Best in Show at E3! Oh, we're so proud. That's a good doggie.
  • Slate got some illustrators together and asked them to make pulp book covers for classic works of literature. Sounds awesome...and it is! The best one is probably for Animal Farm (pictured here), but they're all great. (Via)
  • This crazy awesome short film, called Tyger, features a giant tiger bringing wild nature to the city. It's a fascinating combination of live action, puppetry, and computer animation. The whole thing is done exceedingly well; even the music is excellent! Definitely take the time to download it and check it out. (Via)
