Whiz of the Web: Wednesday Whiz-Up

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

  • Slate figures your kids will have a lot of questions about the Brangelina baby, and so they helpfully walk you through how to answer them in this ridiculous and hilarious article. (Via Sarah)
  • Have you ever dreamed of being a little Italian plumber, breaking bricks with your fists and crushing evil mushrooms underfoot? Well your dream may just become a reality, you crazy weirdo, and all thanks to three New York University students and their Nintendo Amusement Park project! The original idea behind the park was a life-size recreation of Super Mario Bros. So far they've got Mario's jumping ability (via a 40-foot-high motorized truss, bungee cords, and a military harness), a couple of Mario Bros. costumes (complete with moustaches), some yellow balloon coins that players can collect by popping them, a power-up box you can punch, and appropriate sound effects synched to your movements. Their dreams are much bigger, though; they see collaborations with Nintendo and Disney, a 100-meter-long obstacle course, and a haptic winch that can instantly react to the player's movements and "boost their physical abilities accordingly." Once it's created, the students say, the winch could be reprogrammed to recreate the physics of pretty much any video game. Dude, awesome. Check out the videos on their site (linked above), and this fun photo gallery. Then head on over to the sign up page and try convince them to come to Philly so we can all try it out here. (Via)
  • You can check out some illicit pics from the set of Spider-Man 3 here. There's not a lot to see here - except for a rather exciting peak at a small part of the new black symbiote costume. Oh, and looks like Tobey's sporting a new, vaguely cooler haircut. (Via)

  • Wow! Clerks 2 got an 8-minute standing ovation from the notoriously tough crowd at Cannes, where it debuted recently during a midnight screening. This makes us want to see it even more than we already did.
  • You know, there's fine art, and then there's art that shoots 100 foot tall plumes of flame. Apparently there's a thriving community of folks creating mechanical fire art of this type out in the Southwest, most of it connected to the Burning Man festival in some capacity, and luckily, this community includes a guy who blogs. Flame Effects features pictures and videos of amazing flame-throwing contraptions of various sorts, including a ring of fire hooked to an EKG, whose flames pulse with the beat of your heart, and a game called Dance Dance Immolation, which is like Dance Dance Revolution, except when you do well flames shoot into the sky, and when you do poorly "it shoots you in the face with flamethrowers." Holy crap! Obviously, a protective suit is required. (Via)
  • One Gamespot writer apparently made the mistake of saying the PS3 would never be priced at $450 or more, and that if it was, you could "feel free to punch me in the stomach." Of course, the PS3's price was recently announced to be an astounding and off-putting $600. Thus, this video of one Gamespot writer getting punched in the stomach by another. And that, friends, is priceless. (Via)
