Whiz of the Web: Friday Fried Onions

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

  • The latest trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water puts to rest any fears we might have had that the film is just some weird and pointless retread of Splash. In fact, it looks like the appearance of the odd lady in the apartment complex's pool is just the first step in an invasion from another world - a world that's apparently full of dangerous and fantastic creatures. This more detailed look at the upcoming movie offers both the promise of a great fantasy thriller, and the potential of abject failure. Which is a combination we've come to expect from Shyamalan's projects. We know he's a talented director; we just hope he's got another really great, flawless movie in him somewhere. (Via)
  • On the one hand, we suppose this study about how monkeys consume alcohol will probably be helpful in studying alcoholism in humans. But on the other hand...dudes, stop giving liquor to those monkeys! Man. Anyway, turns out monkeys drink alcohol a lot like we do: the lonely ones drink more, and some like a wee nip after work. And some use way more than they should, due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors:
"It was not unusual to see some of the monkeys stumble and fall, sway, and vomit," Chen added. "In a few of our heavy drinkers, they would drink until they fell asleep."
We reiterate: get that alcohol away from those monkeys! Or at the very least take their keys away from them.
  • Today's round-up of the Wii news from E3: some folks are still not over the new name yet; there'll be a new Duck Hunt game playable with the help of a light gun peripheral (which is basically just a snazzy cradle for your Wii-mote - (via); and there'll be a new Smash Bros. game called Super Smash Bros. Brawl (screenshots) featuring new playable characters like Solid Snake, Wario, and Pit from Kid Icarus, not to mention a mostly naked Samus (you know, like you saw after you beat the original Metroid with the best time). It'll also have online play. That's hot.

  • The British government did some research and put together a report stating basically that UFOs are fake. Boo! What would Agent Mulder say?
  • Another entry in our "horrifying products" series: the Persuasive Mirror. This thing gets hooked up to a bunch of cameras throughout your house, which monitor your eating, sleeping, smoking, sunbathing, and exercising habits, and then when you look in it, it takes your image, processes it using all the data it's collected, and presents you with an image of yourself as you will look in the future - wrinkles and all. Agh!
  • For some reason, things that wouldn't normally be all that funny are often quite funny when done in the context of remixing an old TV show. Thus, The Skeletor Show, a series of videos that make use of footage from the old He-Man cartoon, combined with goofy new audio, to tell the story of Skeletor's wacky home life. It could be funnier than it is - and it's certainly not as awesome as that He-Man music video for the 4 Non Blondes song that was going around a while ago - but it's still worth a look. (Via)
