Mother's Day has Philadelphia origins, having been conceived by resident Anna May Jarvis, as well as recognized here first as an official holiday. We only feel the need to share these facts because this Sunday is Mother's Day (and if you're just realizing this now, Phillyist has to warn you that all the good Mother's Day cards are already taken), and we wanted to let you know there are some things happening around town to help keep you in Mom's good graces:
Saturday:
Mother's Day Bouquet Workshop at the Abington Art Center (515 Meetinghouse Rd, Jenkintown). Between 1-3 PM on Saturday, the Art Center staff will guide you through the bouquet-making process. $2 admission.
Improv Motherload: I've mentioned this in the weekend edition of Frugal in Philly, but it bears mentioning again: Saturday night at the Mum Puppettheatre (115 Arch Street) members of several local improv troupes will be performing at 8PM, in what they are billing as the "mother of all improv shows.". Tickets are $10 and Moms get in free.
Sunday:
- Mother's Day Brunch(es) at The World Cafe: The World Cafe (3025 Walnut Street) is offering two different brunch options with live musical accompaniment. On their Downstairs Live stage, diners will be treated to the Gospel of the Huff Singers at 11AM & 2PM. Upstairs dining Moms will be entertained by the Meridee School of Music kids: Accidentally on Purpose (at 11:30 AM) or White noise (at 2:30PM). Your admission price includes the brunch buffet.
- Schuylkill River Cruise: Batrams' Garden (54th and Lindeberg) offers a narrated cruise of the Fairmount Water Works at 1PM.
- Designing for the Dead: Granted, a cemetery tour isn't a traditional Mother's Day activity, but Sunday's 2PM art & architecture tour of Laurel Hill Cemetery (3822 Ridge Avenue at the Cemetery Gatehouse) sounds like an interesting way to spend an afternoon...and one that would almost certainly surprise her.
A very happy Mother's Day to our Moms...and all the Moms in Philly.
