Frugal Fun Alert: Weekend

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

FRIDAY
Goodnight Nobody: Philly's reigning chick-lit author, Jennifer Weiner, will be appearing at Head House Books (619 S. 2nd Street) to talk about her latest novel, Goodnight Nobody, at 7PM. Free

Music at Green Line: Sherman Arts & Bowerbird present a free evening of music beginning at 7:30PM at the Green Line Cafe (43rd and Baltimore). Performing will be Tuntematon 3.0, The Bastard Trio and Dave Smolen.

Music at The Church: R5 Productions presents Disfear, Phobia, 9 Shocks Terror, Strong Intention and Rumpelstiltskin Grinder at The First Unitarian Church (2125 Chestnut Street) at 7:30PM. $10

Hands and Knees: Friday DJ dance party at the M-Room (15 W. Girard Ave). $5 (21+)

Five Spot House Party: Weekly event with Gregg Nyce. $5 before midnight, $10 after. At the Five Spot (5 S. Bank Street) natch. 9PM

SATURDAY
"The Mother of all Improv Comedy Shows": A handful of local Improv actors (including representatives from The Rare Bird Show, the N Crowd, Industrial Improv, Philly ComedySportz & Bad Hair) presents Improv Motherload, a night of improv comedy at the Mum Puppettheater (115 Arch Street) starting at 8PM. Tickets are $10 - and since it's mother's day weekend, your Mom gets in for free.

Exploration/Exploitation: The Secret Cinema presents the double feature, Exploration/Exploitation, consisting of two 1930's feature films that will no doubt make the most politically correct among us cringe: Congorilla & Beyond the Caribbean. The show begins at 8PM at the Moore College of Art & Design (20th & Race Street). $6

Thee Phantom: Thee Phantom at NXNW (7165 Germantown Avenue), 10PM. $10

SUNDAY
"Songs for Seniors:" I'm not sure why Burton Young & Associates assume that only seniors will enjoy "some of the greatest hits of Broadway and the silver screen," which they are presenting free in the Kimmel Center Plaza (260 S. Broad Street) at noon. It's their title - not mine. I, for one, love Singin' in the Rain.

Got a frugal tip? Don't be stingy! Send it here and share the wealth!
