Foodsday Tuesday: Getting Naked

juicer.jpgPhillyist loves Naked Juices. What we don't love is paying three to four dollars for one tiny bottle. Fortunately, Phillyist also has an electronic juicer, and when we have the time and motivation to buy the right fresh fruits, we can make our own Naked Juices -- and our results taste better.

Combine the fruits that appeal to you. We tend to start with an orange (no rind!) or apple base, just like if we were making a smoothie. Then you can add whatever other fruits you like: berries, grapes, even pomegranates or melon (make sure you separate the fruit from the rind).

Beware: certain fruits aren't juicer-compatible. Be sure to read your instructions before trying to juice harder fruits, like mangos. Some of these fruits need to be pureed in a blender first -- or you can just buy juice or nectar and add it to your juice blend.

There are, of course, a ton of vegetable juices, or fruit-and-veggie-mix juices, that you can make in your blender. Experiment. See what you like. And if you're really at a loss when it comes to figuring out flavor combinations, try copying your favorite juice blends, like V8 Splash, and seeing what works for you.

A real juicer (as opposed to a citrus juicer) can run you anywhere from $30-$250, but it'll pay itself off really quickly if you use it often enough. Which you'll do, because fresh-squeezed juice can get quite addictive!
