Yo, Philly in the News

  • Here's the run-down of the big Eagles drafts news as of this writing: they've dumped veteran players Hollis Thomas (defensive tackle) and Artis Hicks (guard) in order to get better and earlier picks. But who did they get? In the first round, they grabbed up Florida state defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley. They also took Georgia guard Max Jean-Gilles in the fourth round. More details are on the Eagles official draft website, here. What will these new players mean for our team? Well, you can read what the analysts are saying about it, but we all know nobody will know for sure until we actually see them on the field this coming season.
  • Jill Porter at the Philadelphia Daily News put up a great opinion piece on Friday wherein she assigns nicknames to all six Philly mayoral candidates, in order to make it easier for us to keep track of them all. We kind of prefer the runner-up nickname for John Dougherty ("The Electrocutioner") to the final pick ("Doc Frankenstein"), but all are amusing in their own way. Enjoy.
  • A meeting of the zoning board has probably never been as exciting and ridiculous as the circus that went on this past Friday. The topic was a potential new Scores gentlemen's club on 6th near Spring Garden. (With its usual flair, the Daily News described the issue thusly: "The ribs-and-rubs, pasta-and-pasties joint would sit in the lap of the Old City/Northern Liberties border.") Attorney Joe O'Donnell (representing the pro-Scores side) apparently decided to get some LARPing in while he was there, and showed up as Andrew Hamilton, complete with costume and tri-corner hat. Meanwhile, a U Penn cognitive therapist spoke for the anti-Scores side, reciting a long list of the filthy names strippers tend to be called by customers, as well as mentioning the high likelihood of butt and breast grabs. Unfortunately for her side, the zoning board deals only with land use, and would require proof that Scores would "endanger the health, safety and welfare of the neighborhood." No such proof has been given yet.
