Whiz of the Web: Tuesday Torpedoes

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

  • Having just finished reading the wonderful graphic novel Superman: Red Son, which answers the question, "What if Superman had landed in Russia instead of America?" Phillyist found The People's Mario, in which the Nintendo icon is reimagined as a Communist superhero, particularly amusing. We think you'll enjoy it, too, for its clever/cool animation and fun action sequences. (Via)
  • The obvious next step: Massively Multiplayer Online Grand Theft Auto. It's the second public beta of a game-mod for the PC version, and as of this writing they're accepting testers. So go ahead, sign up, and start beating hookers for money with all your friends! (Via)
  • Shakespeare's 18th sonnet, "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day," translated into the ActionScript programming language. We're not sure what to say about this except...OMG, so awesomely nerdy. (Via)

  • We don't like spoilers, so we don't like to read script reviews for movies we think we might see, but as a Philly blog we'd be remiss if we didn't link at least to this excerpt from a review of the script for Rocky 6. We felt okay reading this much of the review, and were intrigued by what we saw. Sounds like Rocky 6, appropriately enough, is going to be the story of a washed-up has-been who lives in the past. Huh. It could be good!
  • Grind House could be dead?? Say it ain't so! Grind House, if you don't know, was to be composed of two hour-long '70s-style horror exploitation flicks by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, linked together by an intermission complete with fake trailers and ads in the same style. It was (and still is, until we hear for sure) this Phillyist writer's most anticipated upcoming film. But now word is filtering out that Rodriguez has stopped production on his half, and the film may never be completed. Argh! The pain!
  • The official trailer for Clerks II can be seen in front of Scary Movie 4, but in case you actually have respect for yourself and don't want to go see that movie, you can check it out online instead thanks to the miracle that is YouTube. There's what we did, and now that we've seen it, we have to say, the movie looks...just okay. Not as funny as we'd hoped. Of course we're still going to see it, but...man. Disappointing. (Via)
