Whiz of the Web: Friday Fried Onions

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

  • A team of engineers and chemists has finally improved on the classic lightbulb by creating something brighter and far more efficient - the organic LED. It's carbon-based, transparent when off, and only 10-nanometers thick, and can be built into walls, furniture, or even windows. These won't be in stores tomorrow - they still need to figure out a good, cheap way to protect the sensitive diodes from moisture - but they may some day change light as we know it. (Via)
  • There's really a blog for everything now, not just for cities! As proof, witness this link to a blog chronicling comic strips abusing the use of that old comedy tactic, the silent penultimate panel. We'd never noticed before how often this particular format is used in strips. It's a good thing the internet is out there, making us aware of important problems like this one! In all seriousness, though, this is a pretty amusing blog. Check it out. (Via)
  • Finally, the online RPG all the geeks have been waiting for: the Final Fantasy Dating Sim RPG! Looks like you can only play as a male character (at least, we think those are all males - it's hard to tell sometimes with FF characters), and only date females, which is rather restricting. Apparently the game-makers made an assumption about the gender and sexual orientation of the majority of their audience...and, to be fair, it was probably a pretty accurate assumption. We tried this out for a while, but found it pretty confusing and didn't get much of anywhere - all the girls we met said either "Um...hello?" or "Get away, freak!" Which, come to think of it, is pretty similar to our usual real-life social interactions... (Via)

  • Indians in a remote village in the mountains of southern Colombia are putting the "coca" back in Coca-Cola. Their citrus-flavored Coca-Sek has a syrup produced by boiling coca leaves, the same leaves that are used to create cocaine. (As you probably already know, Coke's original recipe included cocaine.) The coca leaves are plentiful in Colombia, and are consumed as a matter of routine by the Indians there, who also consider them sacred. They say they just want to remove the stigma from the leaves, and market their value as nutritious and energizing food. Of course, that stigma is also a large part of the marketing potential... (Via)
  • We filled you in on some of America's plans for the moon the other day, but Europe has plans too, which include sending a lunar lander and rover to the surface, and planting a flower. Aww. That's sweet. (Via)
  • Annoyed with the high cost of air fare? Well, if you're flying in Ireland anytime soon, you might consider Irish airline Ryanair. They're moving toward a business model where passengers fly for free. It's already true for a quarter of their customers, and by 2010 over half will be paying nothing for air fare. "So what's the trick?" you ask. "How do they make money?" By charging for ancillary services, like baggage check-in, ads on seatbacks, and so forth. Let's just hope they don't decide to count things like "having a chair" or "riding in a plane without a goblin on the wing" as ancillary services. (Via)
