Whiz of the Web: Wednesday Whiz-Up

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

  • Check out this awesome stop-motion animated live action short film The Art of Motion, which looks to have been made by a handful of college students. It features some pretty fantastic animation, as well as a fun fight sequence and a great soundtrack (you'll recognize the song). A great way to kill two and a half minutes. (Via)
  • Galbadia Hotel is your source for video game and anime soundtracks. You can download them in MP3 or MIDI format for free! There's not much they don't have, and they're adding more all the time. Pretty impressive. Somebody's bound to come along and shut them down pretty soon, though, so get over there quick and grab the underworld theme from Super Mario Bros. before it's gone! (Via)
  • Hey, remember Geordi's visor in "Star Trek: The Next Generation?" We kind of have that now. It's a pair of glasses with a little camera on the tip. The camera sends signals to a computer that the subject wears around his/her waist, which then stimulates electrodes in the brain via a cord attached to the head. It's not perfect sight - the person will just be able to see flashes of light and the outlines of objects - but it's way better than nothing, and pretty damned amazing. The surgery isn't performed in the United States (the article talks about a woman who flew to Portugal to get it), but it may be in the next five years. (Via)

  • Every once in a while we come across a random site with some fun pictures of a cool case mod or two, and we all have a good laugh and enjoy ourselves. But now someone has what claims to be the Ultimate List of Case Mods! There's no need to just stumble across the things anymore - now you can just go to the source. Nice. It's hard to pick a favorite, but we're rather partial to the Microwave PC. (Via)
  • The strange story of Mr. A, the man who took 40,000 ecstasy pills in nine years, thus overtaking the previous record for most ecstasy taken in a lifetime by about 38,000 pills. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the guy started have some serious health problems and decided to stop. Unfortunately, not all the problems went away, and the guy may be messed up for life. My favorite part of the article is when it comes out during the study that he also smokes a lot of grass. This is a British article, so they put things very politely: "he was encouraged to decrease his use." You think? (Via)
  • Astronomers examining deep space have spotted a cloud of alcohol out there that's 463 billion kilometers across. Sadly, this type of alcohol (methanol), isn't safe for human consumption (we think it's funny that they took the time to point that out in the article; they knew what we were all thinking), so this cloud won't be a source of night caps for our space-faring descendents. Still, perhaps because of the title of the Digg post linking to this article, we find ourselves thinking of that famous quote from Ben Franklin: "Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
