I Knew Him, Horatio: This Week in Philadelphia Theatre

hamlet.jpgBecause there’s an upcoming production of Hamlet in the area, Phillyist thought we would correct the oft-misquoted monologue from Hamlet. It is not: “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him well!” No no no. The verse doesn’t even work there. The monologue instead begins: “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio…” (You can find the rest of the monologue by performing a simple Google search for it. This was our “I feel lucky” hit.) Now, on with the listings!

Hamlet - Yet another addition to the current Philadelphia Shakespeare line-up! So… was he mad, or wasn’t he? April 12-22. Tickets available at 1.888.OWLSTIX.

Little Shop of Horrors - Try to avoid making an obvious sexual joke about eating. We dare you. April 13-23. Call 215.572.2112 for tickets and information.

West Side Story - We can say a lot about this show. But the thing we think we’ll share with you is that, as far as Shakespearean adaptations/modernizations, it’s way better than the Leonardo DiCaprio version. April 14-May 6. For tickets, call 610.296.9245.

Macbeth - Philly is all about the Shakespeare these days. This one served as the inspiration for the brilliant Scotland, PA. April 6-15. Tickets available by calling 609.291.9000.

A Skull in Connemara - What’s the opposite of grave digging? April 7-May 7 at the Montgomery County Cultural Center. Tickets through TicketLeap.

Reinventing Eden - If you could make your baby a superbaby, you would, right? April 7-May 7. Tickets online.

Feed the Hype - You’re going to have to go to the website to read the plot summary, because all Phillyist is going to tell you is how skeeved out we are by the accompanying graphic. Through April 15. Tickets online.

Wicked - Are you a good witch, or a bad witch? Through April 9. Tickets are selling out quickly; what remains is available online.

Much Ado About Nothing - This is the second of this year's Shakespeare Festival shows to open, and it's one of Phillyist's favorites. Because we totally get dysfunctional relationships based on verbal abuse. Through May 21. Tickets available online.

Richard III - This one isn't part of the Shakespeare Festival, but seeing as "nobody does Shakespeare better than Lantern Theater Company," we figured we oughtta plug it anyway. Through April 30. Tickets via the online box office.

Trying - The show's summary is a little long, but there's a picture of Logan Square and City Hall on the poster, and our appreciation of that alone might be enough to get us to the Walnut. Through April 30. Ticket information online.

Urinetown - If you had to pay the city every time you had to take a leak, would all those frat parties in University City stop? Through April 9. The box office may be reached at 610.519.7474.

Vietnam 101: The War on Campus - A friend of ours recently visited Oberlin and said that all the students there are hippies. Seems like nothing much has changed. Through April 9. Ticket information on TicketLeap. (See Star Foster’s review of the show here.)

Intimate Apparel - This play is centered around a turn-of-the-century lingerie maker. Perhaps the original Victoria? Through April 16. Ticket information is online.

Syncopation - It's like Dancing with the Stars. For old people. A hundred years early. Through April 9. Tickets available via TicketLeap.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) - "Here's the story of a brotha by the name of Othello/ He liked white women and he liked green jello." Through May 19, as part of the Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival. Tickets available online.

Our Town - We see dead people. Through April 8. Ticket information is online.

The Crucible - We all read it in high school. But in case you don't remember, it's the one with the fake witches and bratty pre-teens, not the one with the philandering salesman. Through April 9 at the People's Light and Theatre. Ticket information online.

Menopause: The Musical - The name says it all, doesn't it? Shows at the Society Hill Playhouse, Tuesday through Saturday at 8 PM, again at 4PM on Saturday, and Sunday at 2 PM and 5:30 PM. Tickets are $45. Call 215.923.0210 for reservations. The Society Hill Playhouse is located at 507 South 8th Street in Philadelphia.
