…just ask Comcast. According to Inga Saffron of the Inquirer, the new Comcast Tower has dreams of being not only the tallest and most environmentally friendly building in Philadelphia…but in the whole US of A. What's holding the building back? The Plumbers Local 690, who are allegedly put out by the plans to install waterless urinals in the building.
There's no official word as to why this is the case – although unofficial arguments seem to range from concerns for public safety to concern about how waterless urinals necessitate fewer labor hours during installation. And there's also the question of local building codes – which currently are not equipped to deal with the question of waterless urinals.
Philadelphians for a More Progressive Philadelphia are staging a protest this Sunday at 1PM in Love Park to let the Unions (and City Officials) know that they support this and future green initiatives in our fair city. They're inviting folks interested in seeing the Comcast Tower earn the title of America's Tallest Green building to come to Love Park and bring, "your inflatable rats, bring your toilet tricycles, bring your silly protest signs." Phillyist loves to see folks stand up for what they believe in. However, we're a little concerned that there's a contingent of people in the city with inflatable rats just sitting around, waiting for a reason to release them on an unsuspecting public.
