We have a couple announcements for the Style Devotees among you.

Now through Earth Day, Phillyist favorite Buffalo Exchange is sponsoring a Coats for Cubs drive. Bring your real and faux fur apparel, including fur trims, fur accessories, and shearling to any Buffalo Exchange and they'll give it to The Humane Society for use as as bedding to comfort orphaned and injured wildlife. As the critters aren't fashionistas, damaged goods are a-ok. (You can also mail your fur directly to The Humane Society of the United States in order to get a tax deduction. More details available here.)

In other news, if you haven't heard, Philly original Strawbridge's (or "Straw's," as some locals call it) has been sold. Lord & Taylor's is to be converted into a Macy's, and the Gallery Strawbridge's space is still up for grabs. *sniffle*
However, there is an upside to this sad tale. Yes, dears, Strawbridge's Closing Sale has begun. Just today, a coworker of ours scored 2 pairs of gorgeous, name brand shoes for 8 bucks each -- the original tag on each pair was over $40.
Before you panic and start lining up outside at 6am and such, realize that the store will remain open until June 1. Therefore, not everything is on sale yet, and a good deal of stuff will probably dip in price a couple more times before settling at final liquidation price. However, you also don't want to wait too long and find out everything's gone -- remember, you snooze, you lose. Therefore, you need a strategy.
Phillyist's own plan is multi-tiered. We're taking an initial trip to grab the sale must-haves that'll go really fast -- shoes, kitchenware, etc. Then, we will visit the store every couple of weeks until closing, just to sop up the extras.
Phillyist has one main request, though. These massive bargain-fests can have unfortunate effects on the populace. While we are all excited, and we all want the best deals, please, folk, let's be courteous to our fellow man. Phillyist doesn't know about you, but we can't help but feel even $8 shoes are not worth knocking over little old ladies for.
Happy hunting, Philadelphia!

We need Boscov's to the rescue
Things I will miss about Strawbridges:
(1) the pig statue
(2) the art-deco elevators
(3) the food court (although I only ever walked around in there - I don't believe I actually ever purchased anything
(4) the "A Christmas Carol" holiday display. I hope someone else picks it up next year!
