Yo, Philly in the News

  • Following up on our theme from yesterday, gunshot wounds are so common in Philadelphia that our trauma surgeons are considered world experts, and surgeons from other, more peaceful places (like Sweden) are coming here as part of a new exchange program to learn how to treat such injuries, as well as knife wounds. Woo! Philly pride!
  • As if guns and knives weren't enough, there was an explosion at the SEPTA Southern District Depot at 20th and Johnston Streets early yesterday morning. Three SEPTA workers were injured, one of them critically. The building was evacuated and authorities are still trying to figure out what happened.
  • Philly politics dropped down to an even lower level than normal Monday when two former primary opponents for a position as a judge, and current opponents in an internal party fight, took their disagreements from verbal to physical. 51-year-old Lou Agre, Democratic leader of the 21st Ward in Roxborough, told 52-year-old attorney Ira Shrager of Electricians' Local 98, "I'm going to kick your ass like I kicked your ass in the last election," and then (allegedly, of course) punched the other man in the head, knocking him out cold. When asked why he'd done that, Agre replied, "Well, he kicked me, so I punched him." Sounds fair to us.
