LA may have their movie studios, fancy film award shows, and street corners littered with red-carpet movie premiere events, but Philly is no film industry slouch. We've our Film Festival coming up, some major movies shot on location here this year, and, this Wednesday, Philadelphia will be hosting the US Premiere Party for the movie Dark Kingdom.
This epic fantasy film, featuring Kristanna Loken (TX of Terminator 3 & Lisa Walensky in Philly) and Max Von Sydow (The Exorcist, The Seventh Seal), is based on the Nordic legend of The Ring of the Nibelungs, and tells the tale of a hero, great evil, and a magic ring. (Before you begin offering the service of your axe and calling "plagiarism" upon the Elves, keep in mind that the Nordic myth this draws from predates both the Lord of the Rings triology and Wagner's Ring Cycle.) Dark Kingdom originally aired on German television as the mini-series The Ring of the Nibelungs, and will air here in the US on Sci-Fi Channel on March 27th and 28th. But don't let the fact that it aired on German television first intimidate you; it was filmed in English. Don't have cable? The DVD will be available from Sony Pictures on the 28th as well.
But why Philly for the premiere? you may be asking. It's not as though Siegfried fought any dragons here.
To which we answer, "Why not? Aren't we as good as Hollywood?" And then we add, "Oh, yes, and Philadelphia's own Dancing Ferret Discs released the soundtrack, which is already available in stores."
Ok, so it's a Sci-Fi channel release, which means the Premiere Party isn't exactly a red carpet event. However, it is open to the public, and Kristianna Loken will be on hand to press the flesh and sign autographs from 9-10 PM. Ah - who needs a stupid carpet anyway? It's just one more thing for us to trip over (and we'd be hard pressed to get Chanel to loan us a fancy dress and someone else to set us dripping with jewels). That being said, we plan to be on-hand at Shampoo for the Premiere party to hear the music and check out some of the film clips, which we hope include lots of scenes with men in armor fighting with swords, because frankly, we really dig that sort of thing.
