Yo, Philly in the News

  • The Philadelphia Orchestra's newest and youngest member (according to WoodTV, anyway), 20-year-old Carol Jantsch, may also be the first female tuba player in a major full-time American orchestra. Apparently women don't normally have the large lung capacity needed to play the tuba, but Jantsch manages it somehow. Go her! Go Philly! (Via)
  • Okay, time for a weird crime story. Kevin Eckenrode (25-year-old new employee of the state Gaming Control Board) and Rachel Kozlusky (his 23-year-old girlfriend) were apparently quite drunk (and possibly also high - a marijuana pipe was found on the premises) when Eckenrode allegedly decided it would be fun to dangle Kozlusky, in just a sweater and underpants, from the 23rd-floor window of Eckenrode's apartment in Harrisburg. She fell 230 feet, crashed through a skylight, and died. Eckenrode has been suspended without pay, arrested, and charged with murder. Even if the death does turn out to be an accident, the homicide charge will probably stand, "because it covers deaths caused by intentional, reckless or negligent acts," says the County District Attorney.
  • Philly's own Cocmast Comcast (oops, heh) yesterday inked a deal with IFC Entertainment to show certain independent films at the same time they hit theaters, via its On Demand digital service. The new feature starts March 22nd, and the movies will be $5.99 each. This is pretty cool, as now people who want to see these films but can't find them at local theaters will be able to dial them up on their TVs. Theater owners are pissed, of course, but they'd probably better get over it; this is the way of the future, folks.
  • AWOL - Alcohol Without Liquid - is a device (see picture above) introduced to the US a few years ago which is used to inhale vaporized liquor. It's only available in one bar in Pennsylvania (in Harrisburg), and it's not even very popular, but that hasn't stopped various groups (including MADD and the National Beer Wholesalers Association - who we suspect have an ulterior, perhaps even economic, motive) from condemning it for promoting irresponsible drinking, and various state lawmakers from proposing legislation to ban it. Many politicians are apparently referring to AWOL as "the crack cocaine of alcohol." They do love their catchy phrases, don't they?

In regard to the "crack cocaine of alcohol" comment--I think that's very funny, because I still recall that during the winter olympics, they were trying to get people to watch the sports by describing them as the "NASCAR of such and such." Bob Costas called snowboardcross the "NASCAR of snowboarding," or something like that. Then they tried to compare the bobsled to NASCAR because some guy who used to design race cars designed the US bobsleds. Maybe AWOL is actually the NASCAR of alcohol.

Hah hah! That is very funny. I hadn't heard all the "NASCAR of something" comments. Frankly, I can't believe anybody would want to compare anything to NASCAR, unless they were insulting it. But that's probably because I just don't get NASCAR.

For the love of Pete and all that is good in Philly, can we PLEASE stop with the TNA photos in every third post? I get it, you think boobs are great. There are other, less obnoxious and alienating great things to accompany your posts.

It's hard to take you guys seriously when you are falling so far behind the curve set by your "-ist" brethern.
