Whiz of the Web: Thirsty Thursday

Slaking your thirst for crazy internet junk since a week ago (yes, in blog world we celebrate milestones as meaningless as one week! Also, shut up).

  • Lists are what we're all about here at Phillyist (well...that, and Philly), so here's IGN's list of the Top 10 Worst Game Controllers. We remember from painful experience just how crappy the controller for the Atari 5200 was (after a while you had to jam those buttons in with superhuman force just to get the system to react at all), and we hate the ridiculously huge and unwieldy original Xbox controller. But the Power Glove has always had a serious attraction for us (I mean, look at that picture up there), and that U-Force thing just looks cool! (Via)
  • Hey, remember how yesterday we were going on about Back to the Future 2 and the petition to get those futuristic sneakers made? Well, turns out another cool item from the movie - the hoverboard - is even closer to being a reality; in fact, a guy on a British tech show has figured out how to make one, and he's put a guide online so you can have one, too! The main elements are a leaf blower engine, piping, plywood, and lots of duct tape. The hardest part will probably be converting from the metric system. The whole thing is supposed to cost only £150. Let us know if you actually make one! Just don't sue us if you break your face riding it... (Via)
  • The Official Xbox Magazine had their deputy editor hypnotically regressed to the age of 10 for about 45 minutes so he could effectively review the video game adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I mean, supposedly. Phillyist is having a hard time believing this is true, partly because of some of the goofy quotes in the article, and partly because...well, we'd never do that for a story. (Via)
  • Ah, one of Phillyist's oldest and most cherished dreams has finally come true, and there are even photos on Flickr to prove it! Yes, they're eliminating the weak link from the ordering process at fast food restaurants - people! As the pictures show, a Taco Bell/KFC in North Carolina has a completely computerized, touchscreen ordering system. Looks like you just punch in what you want, maybe even pay for it at the machine, and then go pick it up. Of course, it'd be even better if the food was automatically whooshed to your car or table via a system of tubes, say, but maybe that'll come later. (Via)
  • We're pretty into computers here in America, right? Look at us, writing our blogs, reading our blogs, sometimes even doing some work in Microsoft Word or something. We practically live on the computer! Still, turns out we're not the most computer literate nation. That honor belongs to the people you'd least expect: the Dutch! According to a recent survey, "82 percent of Dutch residents said they used a computer at least occasionally at home or at work, and 72 percent used the Internet." Our numbers are only 76 percent and 70 percent, respectively. We've got to fix this, people. And Phillyist knows just how to do it: all of you go tell your friends to find a computer and log on to Phillyist.com immediately! Tell them it's their patriotic duty! (Via)
  • The mantis shrimp has a spring-loaded hammer-like claw that can strike at a speed of 50mph, with enough force to shatter the thick glass of a standard aquarium. The movement is so fast that it creates cavitation bubbles in the water that collapse to generate heat, light, and sound. Check out a video of a mantis shrimp using its claw to break a shell, and keep in mind that this clip has been slowed by a factor of 900; at normal speed you'd see nothing but a flash. Nature is awesome. (Via)
