Just Like the Ones We Used to Know: This Week in Philadelphia Theatre

Here it is, a week late, a lyric from the actual song “White Christmas.” (We never did get our shopping done, though. This year we’re celebrating Chanukah, for convenience.) Now, on with the listings!

home.jpgGentlemen Volunteers - World War I seems an unlikely play setting, but when has Pig Iron ever said no to a challenging topic? The play is being produced at the Drexel Armory, January 4-22. Tickets are available through Smarttix.

Collected Stories - We call them stalkers, The Players Club of Swarthmore calls them “adulatory fans.” January 5-21. Ticket information is available online.

Enigma Variations - Maybe it was all the Murder, She Wrote or Matlock we watched in the eighties (we know, it’s kinda sad), but we love a good mystery whenever available – and it looks like one is available. At the Independence Studio on 3 at the Walnut Street Theatre, January 3-22. Ticket information is available online.

Pete ’n’ Keely - People break up. Sometimes they reunite. But it’s pretty rare that both of those things happen on camera. At the Act II Playhouse, January 6-February 5. Ticket information is available online.

STOMP - Who knew brooms and cigarette lighters could be so musical? At the Merriam Theater, Through December 31. For tickets and information, see Ticketmaster.

The Philly Fan - they’re a breed of their own. Through January 21. For tickets and information, call 215.922.4462.

Dreamgirls - So girl groups might not be as in vogue as they were ten years ago – but it’s never too early to be nostalgic for the girl groups of the 60s. At the Prince Music Theatre, through December 31. Tickets available online.

Double Down - 1812 Productions brings holiday audiences an homage to comic (and unintentionally comic) duos of the past. Through January 8 at the Adrienne. Tickets are available online.

The Dinosaur Musical - We’re not exactly sure how the Arden plans on getting a bunch of dinosaurs to sing and dance – their ceilings are awfully low – but we’d sure pay to find out! World premiere, runs through January 22. Tickets can be ordered online.

A Christmas Carol - Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatsoever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to'. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Runs through December 31 at the Hedgerow Theatre. Show dates are available online.

Shakespeare in Hollywood - You’ve seen Shakespeare adapted for Hollywood. But what about Shakespeare adapted for Hollywood adapted for the stage – with a twist? At the Wilma through December 31. Tickets available online.

Seussical - Feeling nostalgic? Howsabout a little Dr. Seuss – set to music – to make you feel like a kid again? At the Media Theatre through January 1. Tickets can be purchased on the theatre’s secure ticket ordering site.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast - These days musical theatre is all about the spectacle. Giant chandeliers crashing down. A helicopter landing on stage. Large puppets that suggest, but don’t replicate, African animals. A beast changing into a man before the audience’s very eyes. That last one is what you’ll get at the Walnut Street Theatre, along with perennial Disney favorites like “Be Our Guest” and “Gaston.” Show runs through January 8. For tickets and information, see the Walnut Street Theatre’s online box office.

Menopause: The Musical - The name says it all, doesn’t it? Shows at the Society Hill Playhouse, Tuesday through Saturday at 8 PM, Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM, and 5:30 PM on Sunday. Tickets are $45. Call 215.923.0210 for reservations. The Society Hill Playhouse is located at 507 South 8th Street in Philadelphia.
