Philly to Host Justice Sunday III

Ringing in the New Year with a bang, the Religious Right will be holding Justice Sunday III in Philadelphia on January 8, 2006. Scheduled to appear at Greater Exodus Baptist Church for the shindig are James 'Spongebob Squarepants is The Gay' Dobson from Focus on the Family, Tony 'Gays are Destroying America' Perkins from Family Research Council, Jerry 'Tinky Winky is Looking at Me Funny' Falwell, Herbert 'Kanye West Doesn't Know What He's Talking About' Lusk, Bishop Wellington 'Slavery was Redemptive' Boone, and our own Senator Rick Santorum.

Justice Sunday strives to convince us all that judicial activists - such as the Bush-appointed conservative Republican judge who recently ruled against Intelligent Design in Dover, PA - are ruining this country and have declared a de facto war on Christians. Justice Sunday III: Proclaim Liberty Throughout the Land follows Justice Sunday II: God Save the United States and this Honorable Court, Justice Sunday I: Stop the Filibuster Against People of Faith, and Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol. OK, maybe not that last one.

Phillyist has to wonder if it's a smart move for Senator Santorum to align himself with such a far Right group whose ideas some Christians feel is damaging the message of love and compassion espoused by Christianity. After all, the recent ouster of all conservative board members advocating the teaching of Intelligent Design as science in Dover, PA (as well as his sinking poll numbers) sent Senator Santorum skittering to the middle. Is aligning himself with what many think of as Christian extremists the best idea to help him with his re-election campaign in 2006?

Planned Parenthood of Southeastern PA sent out an email yesterday inviting those interested to counter-activities on Saturday, January 7. No doubt many other groups will organize protests and counter-activities for the entire weekend. Stay tuned.

And after their event are they going to go burn the Reichstag?

Interesting how Evangelical Christians are labeled "extremist" while Catholics are labeled "devout"??

What, FijiDan, are you feeling guilty or something?

I don't believe I differentiated between Catholics and Evangelical Christians, and neither did any commenters. In fact, isn't Rick Santorum Catholic? And, funnily, I know several Evangelical Christians who are completely normal and not part of the Extremist Christian crowd. Who, exactly, are you quoting when you're talking about "devout" Christians and "extremist" Evangelic Christians?
