Okay, it's hard to say this, but we've been meaning to for a while, and now's the time: Phillyist doesn't think you're punk enough. There, it's out, and we feel better for it. Whew.
Anyway, luckily the International House is offering you a great chance to educate yourself. Tonight and tomorrow night they're screening a double feature of documentaries on two legendary punk rock bands. The films are The Fall: The Wonderful, Frightening World of Mark E. Smith and We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen, and both are Philadelphia premiers. For the $7 admission price (or a measly $5 for students, members, or seniors) you'll learn about these two quite different punk bands, one out of Manchester, England, and the other out of San Pedro, California.
We love the sarcastic, vicious, machine-gun-quick onslaught of a Minutemen album, where each song is so short and so fast (they didn't like to repeat themselves, and they took their name literally) that if you don't like it, it's all right, because it's already over. But to tell you the truth, Phillyist could use a punk refresher ourselves, because - and we're ashamed to admit this - we'd never even heard of Mark E. Smith and The Fall until we read about this screening. So come down to the iHouse and check out the films; you'll probably see us there, too - taking notes.
