That chill you're feeling? Sure, it could be the frigid temps...but it also might be that you're inadvertantly walking on someone's grave. Sure - we all know that many of our Center City parks are mass burial grounds - but you might be surprised to learn that there are hidden, unmarked graves...in our local cemetaries.
According to Philly.com, Christ Church Burial Ground (5th and Arch Streets) recently discovered some graves beneath the pathway that leads to the infamous grave of birthday-boy Ben Franklin. Apparently the memorial of Robert Usher and his family has been lanugishing six inches beneath the marching feet of tourists eager to throw their pennies on the grave of one of our Founding Fathers (although why, we aren't sure...if you're trying to honor his adage, wouldn't it be better to save your pennies rather than throw them away?). Further, burial ground coordinator, John Hopkins, is quoted as saying, "It is likely that several graves are even farther below ground."
So walk with care, fellow Philadelphians. In a historic city like this, there's no telling who you're stepping on.
