Frugal in Philly - Can't Wait to See the Ape?

MoneyFrugal in Philly is a weekly celebration of all things Philly that are fun, frugal (costing $10 or less) or free! Stop here each week to see what Philly's got to offer for those of us who haven't quite mastered the art of becoming Independently Wealthy (although believe us, we're trying).

Featured Pick of the Week: Free King Kong!
It may have been beauty that killed the beast...but the anticipation for Peter Jackson's version King Kong is whittling away at some of us as well. If you are among the Kong-krazed (yes, yes, we're sorry we did that) - make your way down to the Rotunda (4014 Walnut Street) this Thursday night at 8PM, when the monthly cinematic celebration, Andrew's Video Vault, will be screening both the 1933 and 1976 versions of King Kong. The monkey madness is FREE, and starts at 8PM.

This Week's Events:

Tuesday:

Comedy Open Mic Night:
Helium Comedy Club (2031 Sansom St.) 2 hours of comedy for just $5 (+ the cost of two menu items)

Rumi
Michael Green & The Illumination Band will be at the UPenn bookstore (3601 Walnut Street) joining forces to give the works of 13th century poet Rumi a new spin. FREE

Friday:

Free Friday Noon Concert:
WXPN's free and weekly lunchtime concert Downstairs at World Cafe (3025 Walnut Street). This week's show features local artists - Marah on Friday December 9th. Show starts at Noon and is FREE. RSVP required.

Boring Films:
Friday night, Secret Cinema is presenting "a collection of the most maddeningly mundane movies ever to be screened in one sitting." For a mere $6 you can see Typing Lessons, Dodge Dancing Party with Lawrence Welk, How the Animals Discovered Christmas - and more uninteresting shorts at the Moore College of Art & Design (20th & Race Streets)...although we're not altogether clear on why you'd want to.

Sunday:

Melange Theater "Live" Variety theater 7:00PM, at The Rotunda (4014 Walnut Street). Suggested donation of $7.

Monday:

Philly Rising Open Stage:

Weekly open mic Upstairs at World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut Street). Show starts at 7:30 PM (get there at 6PM if you want to sign-up a 15-minute performance slot). Free!

Movies at the Troc:
This week's feature, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (looks to be the Depp version, not the Wilder). $3 admission fee (redeemable towards concessions). DJ Town Jewerz will spin before and after the movie. Should be safe, so long as the music performance includes no Oompa Loompas. 1003 Arch Street, 8PM (21+ only)
