A loyal Phillyist reader asked us, recently, “Is there any way of dressing nicely without actually having to examine yourself in the mirror?”
Phillyist’s answer was some consternated stuttering and sputtering, which eventually resolved itself into a resounding NO.
Male or female, the mirror is your control. Outfits that seem great in theory sometimes just don’t work quite right in execution. The mirror is what can allow you to keep checking your look, until you have brought the whole into harmonious balance.
Think of it as your steering wheel. No matter how well you know the road, it would be folly to drive it without a wheel. A cat could run across the road, or maybe there’s construction that day and you need an alternate route. The mirror is just the same – thanks to the wonderful vacillations of the human body, your clothes are not going to fit precisely the same every day. Therefore, sometimes even tried-and-true outfits may require a little tweaking, and the mirror is the tool that can guide you through it. And new outfits must always be checked most critically, as there are so many unknowns involved.
Phillyist is a firm believer that every household needs at least one full-length mirror. It needs not be the most fancy mirror – one from Target will do just fine. Just be sure you get one that’s vaguely “true” (no one needs a mirror that makes them look heavier than they actually are), and mount it against a wall so it cannot bend or bow with age, as cheap mirrors are wont to do.

Yeah, my one and only full length mirror is warped and makes me look shorter and fatter than I actually am. I really should do something about that.
