The Kimmel Center, that bastion of good taste and excessive use of glass on the Avenue of the Arts, opens its doors to all this November. Their Free in the Plaza! festival brings classical, jazz, world music, and dance to the people without the heart attack-inducing prices. On Sunday, November 13, Svitanya, an Eastern European Women's Vocal Ensemble, will “evoke the spirit of traditional village music” with a cappella songs sung in their original languages. More importantly, they'll be wearing those awesome old-fashioned costumes.
Later in the week, Arthur Taylor is joined by students from the Camden Creative Arts High School for a dance performance featuring tap and other styles; progressive jazz band Warren Oree and the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble provide more toe-tapping beats on Friday; and the Haddonfield Symphony Chamber Ensemble comes through with a little Mozart, a little Beethoven, and a whole lotta FREE on Sunday. Phillyist is nothing if not frugal, making high-quality art without a three-digit price tag at the Kimmel Center a must-see.
