The End of the Road for WXPN's Greatest Albums

ClassicAlbumsBeatlesAbbeyRoad.jpgNow that we've all had time to mull it over (the countdown ended with great fanfare and a live broadcast at the World Cafe this Monday), what does Phillyist think about WXPN's list of the 885 All Time Greatest Albums - specifically, the top ten? Well, first of all, for those of you too lazy to click a link, here is that top ten, reproduced for your pleasure (and/or displeasure):

10. Rubber Soul - The Beatles
9. Revolver - The Beatles
8. London Calling - The Clash
7. The Joshua Tree - U2
6. The Beatles (White Album) - The Beatles
5. Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan
4. Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen
3. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
2. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
1. Abbey Road - The Beatles

The general shape of the top ten was relatively easy to predict. We thought the top two albums would appear in the opposite order, but once number 2 had been played, and the DJ asked the crowd at the World Cafe Live what number 1 would be, they answered "ABBEY ROAD!" all at once in a loud chorus. The top ten is also, unlike most of the rest of the list, rather homogeneous, and thus a little disappointing; the Beatles are indeed a great, important, influential, etc., band, but did they really need to take up half the spots on the top ten?! Still, London Calling was a welcome surprise, and it's hard to argue with the inclusion of such classics as Springsteen's Born to Run and Dylan's Blood on the Tracks.

All-in-all, the list was a fun adventure, full of ups and downs, and we at Phillyist are sad to see it finally over. What will we listen to with feverish anticipation and argue passionately about now?

Oh, right, the Eagles' bye week is over now...
