Frugal in Philly: All the Culture at Half the Price

MoneyFrugal in Philly is a weekly celebration of all things Philly that are fun, frugal (costing $10 or less) or free! Stop here each week to see what Philly's got to offer for those of us who haven't quite mastered the art of becoming Independently Wealthy (although believe me, we're trying).

Featured Pick of the Week: Arts and Culture Week
Starting this friday, it's Arts and Culture Week in Center City Philadelphia. This means 1/2 price tickets to a variety of Center City venues from the 21st through the 30th. If you've been looking to check out some of our Philly's swankier cultural offerings, now's the time.

This Week's Events:

Tuesday:

Comedy Open Mic Night:
Helium Comedy Club (2031 Sansom St.) 2 hours of comedy for just $5 (+ the cost of two menu items)

Wednesday:

David Kim in Concert:
At 7:30 PM at the Tenth Presbyterian Church (17th and Spruce Street), violinist (and concertmaster of our very own orchestra), David Kim will perform solo and with a chamber group. This show is FREE.

Think Pink Fashion Show
Fashion show featuring members of the Philadelphia 76ers Cheerleaders to benefit the American Cancer Society's fight against breast cancer. 6PM at The Grape Street Pub in Manayunk (4100 Main Street) $8

Friday:

Free Friday Noon Concert:
WXPN's free and weekly lunchtime concert Downstairs at World Cafe (3025 Walnut Street). Next show - Peita Brown on Friday October 14th. Show starts at Noon and is FREE. However, space is limited, so please have good manners and RSVP if you plan to attend.

Sex Dwarf: New Wave Halloween:
Heavens be praised! Sex Dwarf is now a Friday night event, specfically the 3rd Friday of every month. Head out to Fluid (614 S. 4th Street) on the 21st for this month's dance party, which will feature drink specials until the midnight hour, and a "special spotlight on the Dark Side of New Wave!" Sex Dwarf is FREE before 10:30, and a mere $5 after. At long last, no more stumbling bleary-eyed and sore in to work on the occassional Wednesday morning. (Well, at least not from New Wave dancing.)

Monday:

Philly Rising Open Stage:
Weekly open mic Upstairs at World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut Street). Show starts at 7:30 PM (get there at 6PM if you want to sign-up a 15-minute performance slot). Free!

Ghosts in the Delaware Valley:
South Jersey ghost hunters, The South Jersey Ghost Reseasrch Group are coming to the Free Library of Philadelphia's Main Branch (19th & Vine Streets) to share their documentation of ghosts in the Delaware Valley region. A good way to warm up for Halloween - and since it's at the library it's not silly or superstious - it's educational (at least that's our story, and we're sticking to it). The lecture begins at 7PM - and is FREE.
