That's Entertainment! This Week in Philadelphia Theatre

Phillyist will be talking a lot about the Philadelphia Live Arts and Philadelphia Fringe Festivals over the next coming weeks, and if we tried to give each of those plays an individual listing, you’d be reading this until one week from next Tuesday. Instead, we just want to tell you about some of the other great theatrical goings-on around the city. Stay tuned for Fringe coverage starting tomorrow.

belletall.jpgThe Belle of Amherst - If you’re like us, you’ve had to read your fair share of Emily Dickinson in some class or another. But it’s very rare that we get a true glimpse into the poet’s life in all of those literature classes. This one-woman show does exactly that. The play runs this weekend only at the Hedgerow Theatre. For more information, the theatre’s contact information can be found here.

Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and The Philadelphia Fringe Festival - As we mentioned above, we’ll be talking a lot about the PLAF over the next couple of weeks – but we still wanted to include it in this list because if you don’t see at least one PLAF show this year, you’ll really be missing out. As we mentioned yesterday, lots of Fringe events are free or cheap – so there’s really no excuse. The Fringe Festival officially starts Friday, and goes through September 17.

Anton in Show Business - Everyone loves a backstage play, and this one (about a production of Chekov’s The Three Sisters) looks to be especially filled with, well, backstage drama. The show runs September 15-25 at the Barnstormers Theater in Ridley Park. For more information, call them at 610.461.9969, or see their website.

Finian’s Rainbow - Saint Patrick’s Day may be over six months away, but it’s never too soon in the year for leprechauns! The play runs at the Walnut Street Theatre from September 6-October 23. For more information on tickets, go here.

Loot - Bank robbers and body snatchers and Catholics, oh my! The play runs September 8-October 30 at the Arden Theatre in Olde City. For more information, or for tickets, see the Arden’s website.

Of Mice and Men - You read it in high school, now see it on stage! The Ritz Theatre Company in Oaklyn, New Jersey, brings you their production of this popular John Steinbeck adaptation from September 8 – October 8. To buy tickets, select the “buy tickets online” link on the company’s main page.

Macbeth - We all read it in high school, and we probably remember it at least a little, so we’ll spare you the trouble of reading our summary and just let you check out the Curio Theatre Company’s production of “The Scottish Play.” The play runs through September 11 at the Walnut Street Theatre Studio 5, and then at the Calvary Center from September 15-30. For more information, or to buy tickets, check out the production website.

Hairspray - Those of us who are fans of the Fox summer hit So You Think You Can Dance have heard the producers say on more than one occasion that they’d like to be able to say that big girls can dance. Hairspray proves that at least a few of them can. The show, based on the John Waters film of the same name, runs through September 11. For more information, check out the Broadway Across America website.

Quinnopolis vs. Hamlet - You’d better just click the link above for a description of the play, which promises to be “Kill your brother and steal his wife funny.” The play, directed by David Dalton, will run through September 25 at the Walnut Street Theatre Independence Studio on 3. For showtimes, see the 1812 Productions schedule.

Grease - For those of you who’ve never seen the play or the movie, we’d like to quickly summarize Grease for you: it’s a heartwarming story of a bad boy who falls in love with a good girl who is willing to become a bad girl to keep the heart of the bad boy. Songs include the perennial karaoke favorites “Summer Lovin’” and “You’re the One That I Want.” The show runs at the Lenape Regional Performing Arts Center through September 11. For more information or for a show schedule, check out the Lenape website.

Menopause: The Musical - The name says it all, doesn’t it? Shows at the Society Hill Playhouse, Tuesday through Saturday at 8 PM, Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM, and 5:30 PM on Sunday. Tickets are $45. Call 215.923.0210 for reservations. The Society Hill Playhouse is located at 507 South 8th Street in Philadelphia.

Tony and Tina’s Wedding - Think My Big Fat Greek Wedding, only they’re Italian and you’re invited. Tickets include wedding buffet and post-show dancing. September 10, 16, 18, 24 on board the Spirit of Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing. $79 plus handling fee. For information, visit them on the web.
