Opening the door of Maxx’s Produce, we were met with a delicate aroma of freshness and a visual overload of too many good things to eat. Maxx’s is a produce boutique: cute, small, sometimes a little overpriced, but stocked with such variety that we can’t help going back. On a recent visit, we counted four kinds of pear, and encountered a plum we’d never seen before: who knew they came in green?
The walls of Maxx’s are lined with deliciousness. You can’t see in the front window, because the view is obscured by a selection of oils, vinegars, salad dressings, and honeys. Then there are the nuts, the granola, the bin of cheeses and the shelf of quality chocolates. In the back room we found soy milk, miso, and fresh tofu.
But all that aside, it’s really about the produce. You want a fruit or vegetable? Maxx’s probably has it. Bins of apples. Heads of broccoli nestled in ice. Bunches of fresh herbs. A counter covered in blueberries, strawberries, figs. Gloriously misshapen ugly tomatoes. If you don’t want the hassle of chopping fruit for yourself, you can buy a container of melon pieces, or one of mango and pineapple. Phillyist loved the fresh salsa, which comes in traditional tomato or brightly colored mango. We think the mango one would be great with chicken or pork, but we ate it all with the organic corn chips and spoiled our dinner.
Maxx’s Produce is located at 225 South 20th Street and is open Monday - Thursday 8 am - 7:30 pm, Friday 8 am - 7 pm, Saturday - Sunday 10 am - 7 pm. 215-735-3644.
