For nearly ten years, Spiral Q has been a vibrant community arts and social justice organization in Philadelphia, devoted to bringing art to community members who might never be exposed to it otherwise. You’ve probably seen some of their beautiful giant puppets around the city, either at protests, museums, or schools. But what they’re best known for are their pageants and parades, which seek to bring people together in celebrating their neighborhoods and their city.
This year marks a new beginning for Spiral Q: they’ve gotten together with nine North Philadelphia organizations to put on the UP North Puppet Parade this Saturday at 10 a.m. The parade steps off from Fotteral Square (10th and Cumberland Streets) and should arrive at Fairhill Square (4th and Lehigh Streets) by noon. Once there, participants will perform, mingle, and serve up copious amounts of Philly-style soft pretzels and water ice. And best of all, you’re invited to the entire celebration.
If you’ve never been to a full-scale giant puppet parade, we assure you, you’re missing out. The trip to North Philadelphia this weekend will be well worth it – and you’ll be helping to prove that art doesn’t have to be hanging in museums to be called art.
