There's nothing funny about shelters for the victims of domestic abuse -- and that's a problem that a bunch of local-area actors are aiming to solve.
This Sunday, August 7th, a pack of Philly-local actors will be trying their hand at standup comedy at Fergie's Pub with a show called DIE ACTOR, DIE. The brave comedian-wannabes include Madi DiStephano, Don Montrey and Dawn Falato, and they're putting themselves on the spot for a good cause. Proceeds from the show go to Laugh Away, a new outreach organization dedicated to bringing the joy of comedy to local safehouses for women and children fleeing domestic abuse. Phillyist thinks that sounds like a good idea. Hey, who needs a good laugh more?
DIE ACTOR, DIE starts at 8:30, though Phillyist will probably arrive a little early for some pre-comedy dinner and drinks. After all, everything -- especially amateur comedy -- is funnier after a couple of boilermakers, right? Cover is $5 at the door, and Laugh Away wouldn't mind if you also brought any comedy books, DVDs or videotapes that you happen to have lying around. Honestly, how many times have you watched that Gallagher tape since you bought it?
To review: DIE ACTOR, DIE. 8:30 PM, Sunday the 7th of August, Fergie's Pub at 12th & Sansom. Shepherd's pie, a couple of brews, and performers that you can either laugh at or with. Cover is just $5, and it's for a good time and towards a good cause. Phillyist hopes to see you there.
