First Phillyist Happy Hour at Fergie's on 7/27

Fergie's PubDear Philadelphia,

Phillyist is happy to announce that our first Happy Hour, entitled "Phillyist's First Happy Hour," will take place a week from today on Wednesday, July 27th. Fergie's Pub, located at 1214 Sansom Street, has been kind enough to host us as well as offer us our own $3 lager special.

We hope that you'll join us at the pub, whether you're a friend, foe or stalker. Or even if you hate Phillyist and just really love beer. While you don't have to RSVP, we would still like to hear from you if you plan on attending. That way, we know who to look out for. You can look out for us by spotting the homemade Phillyist t-shirt. Hopefully it isn't stained, but seeing as how we're the "Butterfingers" of the Gothamist family, it probably will be.

$3 lager special? unless you mean pitchers, that doesnt sound very much like a happy hour to me.

user-pic

No, not pitchers. For a bar in the city, it's decent, especially for a new website. As we grow, the prices will shrink.

user-pic

for a bar in the city thats the normal price of lager.

fyi: drinkers tavern, 124 market, has $3 lager pitchers on wednesdays from 6-8.
the khyber has $1 lager bottles 5-8 weeknights... i could go on, but you get the idea.

Jon, I know this isn't a great deal, and I know there are other places we could go for terrific prices, but the idea is that we're trying to do something unique for the site. So, we could join an already large crowd for a great special somewhere else, but instead we opted to have our happy hour at a place where we could have more space to ourselves. We didn't want to piggyback off of someone else's event.

And so, we have Wednesday night at Fergie's. Hope to see you there.

Jon, after browsing this site, hoping for a nice alternative to the normal Philly outlets and finding it completely lacking (oh wait I am a Penn grad; can I get a job too?) I would not expect a deal at their happy hour. Remember the majority of the editors are looking for something to do since they realized life goes on after leaving the Daily Pennsylvanian. Oh well, it is easy enough to find better happy hours, maybe even with people not so full of themselves. I mean there is always Bump for $2 martini's nightly or Monday and Tuesday Crab nights at Bayou Bar & Grill in Manayunk, but hey that would require actually seeing areas other then University City and Rittenhouse.

Dan (can I call you Dan?), for starters, let's get one thing straight. Writing for Phillyist isn't a job. We do this for fun. If anybody has a right to complain about the cost of beer, it's us, the starving, unemployed, unpaid writers of the magazine you've been so quick to judge. (Don't forget Dan, we're new. We've got plenty of time to develop into an alternative. Right now, though, we're just trying to develop.)

As per your suggestions, well, Bump isn't exactly an inclusive place to host a happy hour. Don't get me wrong: I love their drinks, and their atmosphere is great. But it's not exactly a place where we can have a big open event and make everyone feel at home. Bayou Bar & Grill is an excellent suggestion. Are you offering to take all of the Phillyist's writers and readers (most of whom are pedestrians) to Manayunk and back? That's very generous of you.

One last thing, Dan. Fergie's is no more in Rittenhouse than Bump is. In fact, Bump is, by our count, about two blocks closer to Rittenhouse. We are getting out of the two neighborhoods that you seem to so despise. Maybe you should come meet us and see for yourself.

At the very least, Dan, you insult us to our faces.

Bottoms up!

Hey all,

I will try and stop by (even though I don't drink) though I was sad to see the Phillyist under represented at last night's Philly Bloggers' Meetup. What's up with that? :)

Oh, and no Blankbaby on the blogroll? Scandalous.

Oooh! Oooh! If Dan's giving all of us a ride, I call shotgun!

Jill (can I call you Jill?) I was aware of the fact that this is a blog site. After perusing the bios I noticed and awful lot of Penn grads, current students, and a number of working Philadelphians. Maybe I was wrong to read the bios and form this impression because according to you, the writers are “starving, unemployed, and unpaid.” I was a little upset to see that this site (which I believe has a great potential) is beginning to cater only to the Philadelphians of University City, Fairmount and Rittenhouse.

I was very pleased to see stories on music throughout the region (huge accolades to Star C Foster and James P. Conroy). But I was greatly upset to see stories ripping Philadelphia.

I happen to live here and I love it. Is it perfect? No of course not. What major city is? But when someone, who is representing a city by posting on this site, writes things like: “between Live 8 and Philly Freedom, the city would implode on itself,” or “Philadelphia, usually when you surprise me, it’s in a bad way… And does this mean that now you’re going to go back to your old ways … I sure as hell hope not, Philadelphia. You’ve got a reputation to protect.”, or how about a recent story where the author insinuates that all Philadelphians are out to cause harm, and run over pedestrians. It makes it hard for me to enjoy this site. Why is there a need for such harsh criticism? Is this a site informing Philadelphians about the city or is a site where we pile on harsh critisims for reasons never explained? Maybe I was wrong in assuming the former rather than the later.

I personally agree with you that this site has some very good authors and great reads but others like the ones I mentioned turn me off a great deal. I am not sure. I happen to enjoy UC, Fairmount, and Rittenhouse a great deal; so much for your theory that I hate them. In fact I think the one of the best happy hours in the city is Nodding Head, located in Rittenhouse. But the location that was selected and billed with having a $3 lager special is a little disappointing.

I in turn suggested two locations. One was to show the discrepancy in price, the other to show that there are cheaper, better, and more interesting places not just located in these areas which tend to already have a crowd. But, I think that this being a blog it would have been nice to see maybe a poll as to where the first happy hour should be, like they do on phillyblog:

http://phillyblog.com/philly/showthread.php?t=9064&highlight=happy+hour

and

http://phillyblog.com/philly/showthread.php?t=9399&highlight=happy+hour

Instead you chose a very common bar that doesn’t even have good drink prices. Seems like more of the same old thing.

Now I may be completely wrong when I assumed that this site was for all of Philly. But if by your response you are telling me that the writers and readers are meant to live in the places previously mentioned, I will only frequent here if I want to know what is happening in those specific areas. That, however, leaves a large area of the city completely uncovered by a new outlet. If anyone from the city and the suburbs (also given a bad rap at least once) is welcome to read and become part of this group, I would at least expect them to know that Philadelphia does have a public transportation system that can get one from anywhere in the city, including the Northeast, to Manyunk in about 45 minutes or less. Or if as many readers as you say are pedestrians, how about sharing a taxi? The money saved at Bayou will more than compensate for the ride. For those readers in Mt. Airy who work in Bala Cynwood, it could be argued that getting to Fergie’s is much more inconvenient then a person from CC getting to Manayunk. There is also a beautiful trail along the river that is very bike- and blade-accessible from Center City to Manayunk (many commuters do it daily on their bikes).

I hope this helps get my point across without insulting you and gives some input into my criticism shown in the first post.

Cheers

~Dan

Dan,

We're sorry that you're unhappy with our happy hour location, but as we've come to find out these first few weeks, there's no pleasing everyone. I am personally going thirty minutes out of my way to go to Fergie's. I can assure you that the choice was not made because of the location or the special -- it was made because Fergie's said it would be a low-key night where we could get to one another, rather than fight already large crowds.

I think we have a lot of great writers on this site from many different areas. Right now, we're trying to get a sense of what we have access to and where our readers are. It's not an easy task covering such a great, large city. We're finding our way and I hope you'll stick with us.

As for criticizing Philadelphia...Well, I love her, but she ain't perfect. Phillyist is not a pep rally, but it's not a hater, either. I think there's a lot of love going around.

Finally, Dan, if you want to become more involved with Phillyist and what it does, I'd urge you to get in touch with me so we can talk further. If you'd be interested in contributing to the site, that's an avenue we can discuss as well.

a time would help, unless there's a universally recognized standard happy hour starting time that I'm not aware of.
