Come Get Some: Pick a Drinker’s and Let the Good Times Roll

colt45bottles5.jpgWhere is probably the only place in Philly that you can find a poor college student, a doctor, a biker, a businessman, a sorority girl, and a bleached socialite mingling with one another? Drinker's Tavern.

Long before termed Mel’s “serenity hang-out” (a reference to MTV’s Real World: Philadelphia), this dark hole-in-the-wall bar has been getting Philly patrons drunk for nearly three years. Ridiculously drunk. For ridiculously cheap.

Seriously, in a city where martinis are skyrocketing towards the ten dollar mark and burgers for fifteen, this place is a gem for shallow pockets. Where else can you throw back $2 Jaegermeister shots and a 40 ounce bottle ALL THE TIME? 30 bucks buys the whole bar a shot. Not only was its jukebox, which spits out a myriad of tunes from Radiohead to Metallica, voted best jukebox in Philadelphia by City Paper, the bar also gains bragging rights for having the best happy hour in the city. From 7:30 to 9:30, $5 pitchers flow continuously, even on a Saturday night.

Open Thursday through Saturday, 5 pm to 2 am, no cover ever, HDTV’s galore and pinball machines, pool tables, and dart boards for the antsy drinker, this memorabilia-encrusted shrine to Elvis is home to the infamous "Rip Chord" where the bartender will plunge a hole in a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, and you have to chug down the entire beer.

Drinker’s Tavern went over so well with Philadelphia bar patrons that Avram Hornik, who owns it, as well as several other bars and restaurants in Philly, including Noche, Lucy’s Hat Shop, Soma, Bar Noir, and Loie Brassiere & Bar, opened a second version in Rittenhouse Square on June 16. Compare it to a hick in Manhattan but maybe that’s what Rittenhouse needs – to be brought down a few notches.

Drinker's Pub has the same no-frills feel and rock n’ roll atmosphere as it’s older brother in Old City but the Jaeger shots gain a buck and there’s a special of $5 Heineken 24 ounce cans daily instead of $2 Bud Retro cans. I guess there has to be something somewhat upscale to attract the civilized Rittenhouse crowd. Another added bonus to the Pub is the food. Try the nachos supreme and the quesadillas. To top off a belly full of booze, order a fried Twinkie.

So, whether you are more into getting down and dirty or for getting down and dirty on the rocks with a twist of lime, pick a Drinker’s and “Come Get Some”. Either bar, you can’t go wrong.
